Canon's G11 is the highest quality compact around. It has every manual feature an enthusiast would want and the the G11 is the latest version.Unusually, the Canon G11 has fewer megapixels than its predecessor (10 instead of 14.7) but those pixels are bigger, faster, and better in low light. It also now comes with a 2.8 inch flip out rotating screen at the back and a sharp 5X lens. It feels a bit plastic and bulky for a compact. It cannot match an SLR for quality and some buyers might lament not having a small compact for daily snapshots.

Fujifilm Finepix A610
The Fujifilm Finepix A610 is a 6 megapixel digital camera with a 3x Optical Zoom and 2.5 inch LCD screen.

The A610 has an ISO range of 100-400 and is compatible with both SD and xD cards to back up its 10 megabytes of internal memory.

It is now easier and more affordable than ever for consumers to capture high-quality, natural-looking photographs at the click of a button. FUJIFILM U.S.A. Inc. today raised both the picture-taking and purchasing power of first-time digital camera buyers with the launch of two new models, the six-MegaPixel FinePix A610 and eight-MegaPixel FinePix A800.

More than half of all digital camera purchases in 2006 were made by first-time buyers. Almost 60% of these first-time purchases totaled less than $200*. Designed specifically for the first-time digital camera buyer or consumers seeking an easy-to-operate upgrade to their current digital camera, Fujifilm’s A-Series models provide users with a choice of digital cameras that offer top-notch image quality at consumer-friendly price points.

The FinePix A800 is the first model in Fujifilm’s A-Series line-up to sport an eight-MegaPixel Super CCD Sensor and the first to incorporate light sensitivities of up to ISO 800 at full resolution. Borrowing a page from Fujifilm’s more advanced camera models, the FinePix A800 shoots at higher light sensitivities with less noise than comparative models. This results higher quality “natural light” photos and less blur in images as the FinePix A800 matches these higher light sensitivities with faster shutter speeds.

Fujifilm’s A-Series digital cameras are among its most popular models and the FinePix A610 should help continue this trend. This camera has the same comfortable design as the FinePix A800 and is priced right for the first-time digital buyer. In a first for Fujifilm’s compact digital camera range, the FinePix A800 and A610 both feature a “xD/SD Compatible slot”, which accepts not only Fujifilm’s traditional xD-Picture Cards, but also Secure Digital (SD) cards.

  • TrustedReviews has posted their review of the Kodak EasyShare V1233 where they write - 'While the V1233 is a well-made, elegantly designed and easy-to-use camera with an attractive price tag for its specification, the woefully slow performance and inferior image quality make it a poor choice. If you really have to have a 12 megapixel compact (why?), then there are better ones on the market for not much more money.'

Trusted Reviews has reviewed the Kodak EasyShare Z1275 and writes - 'The Kodak EasyShare Z1275 is a camera with a number of problems and few saving graces. It is heavy and bulky for a compact, build quality is below average, it lacks any real image stabilisation for its longer-than-average zoom range, and its performance and image quality are well below par. The HD video mode is potentially useful, the lens is very good and the asking price is relatively low for a 12MP camera, but I'm afraid that isn't enough to save it. The possibility of a crippling technical problem is the final nail in the coffin.'

CNET has a review of the Kodak EasyShare V1003 and writes, "noise and artifacts plagued the V1003's images, softening and obscuring fine details. Photos shot at settings as low as ISO 400 displayed notable amounts of grain, which only grew worse at higher ISO settings. At ISO 1600, static-like speckles completely covered the image, softening all but the largest and most prominent details and rendering it almost completely unusable. ... If you want good-looking, high-resolution images, then choose substance over style, spend a little more, and consider the less stylish but much more reliable Canon PowerShot A640 or SD1000 cameras. They're not as colorful as the V1003, and the SD1000 has 7.1 rather than 10 megapixels, but they're much better designed and offer better image quality."

Pocket-lint has a review of the Kodak EasyShare V803 and is not impressed, giving the camera a 5/10 rating: "Focusing (in macro mode – or any other for that matter) is fantastically slow. ... Once the focusing has finally got it right, continuing to press the shutter to take the shot results in … a further delay while the camera gets going once again. What it is waiting for at this stage I’m not sure, suffice to say, any chance of a spontaneously snapped shot is almost impossible. ... if you need to use the flash as well, the delays only grow even longer as the flash recharge cycle takes half a second and the double pre-flash (used for exposure setting and white balance calculations) means that the subject (if a person) usually tends to think the shots taken and moves off before the actual third “exposure” flash fires. ... while it looks nice, is well made, has some nice features, and is simple to operate, its problems with all those frustrating delays means, in the end, I cannot recommend this camera."

Nikon Coolpix S60
The Nikon Coolpix S60 offers intuitive fingertip shooting control and a variety of exciting playback options, all seamlessly integrated into an innovative touch screen interface. With a newly developed 3.5-inch LCD monitor featuring a 16:9 widescreen display, the only physical button to press is the shutter – and even that isn’t needed when using handy features such as the self-timer or the new Smile Timer. The optimized interface offers a choice of three different HOME screens with large icons that make fingertip selection of operating modes and controls easy and accurate. Even the 5x zoom can be controlled via icons on the touch screen. Advanced features include the ability to lock autofocus and exposure on a subject by simply touching the corresponding location on the screen. The camera then follows the subject’s movement to ensure sharp focus when the shutter is pressed. And, when used in conjunction with the new Portrait One-touch Zoom function available in Portrait or Night Portrait scene modes, one more touch of the screen commands the camera to automatically zoom in and capture the subject with just the right amount of framing. Sony Cybershot DSC-T300
Continuing the success of the T series range, the new Sony DSCT300 Cyber-shot digital camera is the slim and stylish successor to the DSCT200. With a 3.5 inch LCD touch screen and 5x optical zoom, the T300 now also features 10.1 mega-pixel resolution, Intelligent Scene Recognition and Music Slide Show.

The DSCT300 is available in red, black and silver and weighs 149 grams (without battery).

The Sony DSC- T300 is fashionably slim with an extra large 3.5-in. touch-screen LCD monitor. It features Sony's excellent Super SteadyShot® optical image stabilization which, coupled with High ISO, helps compensate for shaky hands and minimizes blur. Image quality suffers from noise and loss of image detail at all ISOs. Intelligent Scene Recognition automate 5 scene modes. The Sony T300 is an easy-to-use point-and-shoot for the casual photographer who will only print 4x6 in. and display for Web. the biggest difference between the T300 and its predecessor is that the new model is built around a more pixel-dense sensor. The lens range also changes, with the wide end getting a tiny bit wider (though we're not about to hold a street party for a 33mm wide angle camera). This is a side-effect of adding a larger, 1/2.3" sensor in the same position as the old 1/2.5" one.
